Green Christmas: Christmas Door Decoration Ideas

I enjoy making Christmas decorations out of natural materials. In America, door decorations for the holidays date back to the 1800s. Making a door swag, evergreen garland or wreath adds a welcoming touch to your front door for the holidays. I've worked as a floral designer and I like passing along tips on creating decor made out of natural materials. This is part of my green Christmas series. The emphasis is on spending time with loved ones or creating decorations and gifts at home instead of having a hectic holiday season doing more shopping than you need to.

The gifts of nature symbolize renewal and the coming spring. Foliage from your yard, herbs, tree trimmings, Christmas ornaments you already have, and reusable materials including fabric and wire create simple or elaborate door decorations. These are projects everyone can do.

Includes materials and tools you need, types of door decorations, ideas for making door decor and step-by-step Christmas door swag -- plus pictures of wreaths and swags for inspiration.

Green Christmas Decor

Green Christmas decor builds on the tradition of homemade decorations for the home, and explores new trends in Christmas decorating. Use sustainable materials such as bamboo, recyclable materials such as paper, metal and fabric, and compostable material such as tree branches and other greenery from your yard. Handmade Christmas decorations bring back Christmas memories from childhood, and can become traditions to share with loved ones to brighten the holiday season and build new memories.

Try a living Christmas tree this year instead of a cut tree, or use clippings from your yard to make an original Christmas tree.Alternatively, build a Christmas tree out of scrap metal, or decorate a large potted plant such as a cactus or philodendron for a Christmas tree. Make new decor choices for the holiday for a twist on favorite holiday themes. Decorate holly branches with elves for an alternative Christmas tree, or hang hand-carved wooden ornaments or pine cones from a sturdy houseplant.

Holly berries give color to wreaths, mantel decorations, door swags, garlands and displays in vases. Take care, because these colorful berries are poisonous.

Scarves, table runners and cotton faux "snow" can be reused year after year. For example, use colorful scarves with metallic thread to decorate an entry way table or coffee table and add a trio of poinsettias or Christmas cacti for a decorative display.

Toys, such as action figures, fashion dolls, teddy bears -- and of course, Santas and snowmen -- can be customized with fabric or ribbons to go with your decorating scheme. For example, tie a green velvet ribbon around the necks of a few matching teddy bears and display them with bowls of tangerines.
